District News and Notes - February 2022

Superintendent Report
Mr. David Rombach

College Credit Plus
There are agreements on the agenda with local universities.   These are to ensure the school is getting a reduced cost per credit hour for students who go outside of the school to get college credit for the 2022-2023 school year and to finalize the CCP in house offerings.

Kindergarten Screening
Kindergarten screening will be open to the general public on April 30, 2021.   All district and potential open enrollment students are asked to pre-register in advance of the screening.   The link is on the school website under the parents and student dropdown.  We currently have 30 pre-registered students.

Social Emotional / Wellness
I have indicated to the Seneca-Wyandot Mental Health Board we would like to take part in the board’s levy funding for the 2022-2023 school year.  We currently use a Clinical Counselor for one day a week.    The mental health grant was close to $13,000.00 for the 21-22 school year.

Mileage Rate Increase
The mileage reimbursement rate New Riegel Local Schools use is currently 45 cents per mile.   We are looking to increase that amount to align more closely with the federal IRS mileage rate of 58.5 cents.

Sub Teacher Rate Increase
The substitute teacher rate is now $100 a day.

Weather Days
As of 2/15/22 we have used 6 weather days.   If we have a weather day prior to Presidents’ Day, we will make up the day on Presidents’ Day.  Any days after, staff will be given specific work days this summer and will be completing a work day form.    Professional development may be part of the summer work day.

Negotiations
Our negotiated agreement with the teachers expires on June 30, 2022.

*NAEP: *The National Math / ELA assessment for 4th graders was rescheduled to Friday, January 28th.  All went well as the 4th grade students completed either Math or ELA in the library following the NAEP guidelines.  An appreciation plaque was provided in thanks for our participation in this program to gain national norm data.

*Winter NWEA Results: * We are still waiting on a few make-up assessments from students who were absent, however the overall results show significant improvement from Fall.

*Promethium Boards: Kindergarten classrooms have had the opportunity to utilize promethium boards to enhance instruction.  This technology acts as an interactive whiteboard that allows teachers to project an image from a computer, as well as interact with the board through touch or specialized pens.  Educational apps are able to be projected and explored as a class.  Teachers and students have voiced their satisfaction with this new technological asset in the classroom.

*TGRG Parent Meeting: 2/17/22 6 pm *Families are invited to an informational meeting regarding the Third Grade Guarantee on February 17th at 6 pm in the auditeria.  Families will receive examples of expectations in English Language Arts along with resources.

Senate Bill 229 has been passed which states, “ For the 2021-2022 school year, if a third-grade student's academic performance in reading in the 2021-2022 school year is below grade level but the student's building principal and reading teacher, in consultation with the student's parent or guardian, agree that the student is prepared to be promoted to the fourth grade, the student may be promoted.  However, if the principal of the school building in which a student is enrolled and the student's reading teacher, in consultation with the student's parent or guardian, agree that the student is reading below grade level and is not prepared to be promoted to the fourth grade, a student in the third grade may be retained.  New Riegel Elementary staff are working together with students and families within the RTI process to make improvements in ELA for these students and anticipate that all students will be able to demonstrate proficiency to advance to 4th grade.
