District News and Notes - December

District News and Notes (submitted by Mr. Rombach)
December 2021

Building
We continue to monitor the previous leaking area on the northwest corner of the building near the front office area.  Flashing was
installed around the window where the leak was occurring and no leak has been observed since the remediation.

We have submitted our OFCC safety grant totaling over $68,000.00.  The grant included upgrades to our PA system, two-way radios and keyless entry to our building.

Repairs to the building in 2021 included: bleacher replacement in the JH gym, parking lot repairs, new wall pads installed in the JH gym, painting in the JH gym lobby and gym and filling in the old sewer plant.

Attendance
December's student attendance has dipped to 93% after a November attendance of 96% average.
We have had 24 students that tested positive for COVID 19 and nine staff members have tested positive.

Technology
New Riegel Local Schools received additional ARP funding of $18,693.57 and Preschool ARP of $1382.72.  These funds will be used to purchase iPads for the preschool and Promethean Activ Panel Boards for classrooms.   Teachers will be given professional development to use these in the classroom.

Personnel
Additional student cleaners were hired at the December BOE meeting along with substitute kitchen workers.

Programs
Mr. Frankart conducted the elementary music program on Sunday December 4.  The students sang a variety of Christmas songs and the 4th graders completed two selections on their ukuleles.  The high school and junior high bands under the direction of Mrs. Kleba performed on Sunday December 11 in front of a capacity crowd in the auditeria.  Prior to the band concert on the 11th, Mr. Frankart conducted the JH/HS choir in the gymnasium.   The students an excellent job in all of the performances.

The 5th and 6th grade bands will be performing on Thursday, December 16 at 6 p.m. in the auditeria

December Staff Meeting
This month’s staff meeting includes topics such as changes in substitute requirements and absences, SEAL program development, an extra-duty positions survey, and several housekeeping items as we move towards the end of the first semester.

Course Guidebook
The course guidebook is currently being reviewed to determine any necessary changes. The revised guidebook will be on the January agenda seeking board approval.

One proposed change is the weighting of our CCP courses to allow students to earn a GPA beyond a 4.0.

Students
Art Museum Field Trip - Art Club, Art III, and Art IV students attended a field trip to the Toledo Art Museum on December 9.

Hoops For Troops - Jacket Leadership sponsored this event during our home boys basketball game against Sandusky St. Mary on December 10. Students collected non perishable items for donation to Splash of Love from Home to send to deployed soldiers. Fans were asked to wear red to show their support for the event.

EOC Exams - Retakes for state end-of-course tests are taking place this week (Dec. 13 – 16). Spring testing will take place at the end of March through early April.

Senior Class Trip
We currently have a proposal from Magical Moments Vacations for travel, accommodations, and park tickets for a six day trip to Universal Studios Resort in Orlando, Florida.  Students would leave on Monday, March 7, and return on Saturday, March 12.  The cost, not including food or travel to and from the airport is currently $920 per student. This is based on at least 35 seniors going on the trip.

Athletics
Winter Sports Season - All of our teams have begun their winter seasons. The bowling team was the last to begin and had their first contest on December 9, against Willard.

Junior and Senior classes are coordinating and operating the concessions this year for all basketball games. The proceeds are being split evenly between the classes to help offset the costs of the class trip.
