Open enrollment will be from May 1 to May 31. Applications will be available on the school website starting on May 1 at 7 a.m.
Kindergarten Screening
Kindergarten screening will be open to the general public on May 12, 2023. All district and potential open enrollment students are asked to pre-register in advance of the screening. If you have any questions, please contact the elementary school office at 419-595-2265
Career Curriculum Development
Mrs. Zamudio and Mrs. Depinet have been meeting regularly to establish a more purposeful and direct career counseling piece for our students starting in grade 6 all the way up to grade 12. Next year our 6th graders will be given a You Science assessment, 7th and 8th graders will take a 9 week course with Mrs. Zamudio on interests and aptitudes, 9th and 10th graders will go more in depth on career possibilities and in the 11th grade, a careers course for our non-sentinel Juniors. That course is currently an elective CCP course for our Juniors/Seniors.
Math Curriculum
Currently, there is a middle school and high school review of math curriculum and to discuss potential course materials for next year with Mr. Johnson and the MS/HS Math teachers. The goal is to review the current curriculum, make the necessary changes to ensure alignment with current state standards and tests and then adopt new textbook and ancillary materials to facilitate these changes. This process will be completed by the end of the current school year.
Facilities
The stage lift has been installed and is operational. We are awaiting final inspection.
Clouse construction came out and fixed the downspouts on the JH gymnasium.
Offset Electric fixed an air handler in the elementary which was installed back in August 2021. It was covered under warranty.
Door access controls are scheduled to be upgraded this summer. This is part of the OFCC safety grant. Access controls will allow for a closer monitoring of exterior doors and will require I.D. swipe cards for entry. Exterior door keys will be replaced with swipe cards starting in the 23-24 school year.
Track Building materials are being delivered.
The retention pond on the property was not draining properly and further review of the drain pipes is ongoing.
Professional Development Day
Our March PD day will be Friday, March 17. Speakers include:
Our clinical counselor - Dr. Megean McBride will be discussing trauma informed care. Trauma can impact an individual in many ways such as physiologically, emotionally, behaviorally and neurologically. Staff will gain insight on how to provide care and promote a positive environment for students experiencing effects from trauma.
Jill Gosche - Handle With Care, an initiative of Seneca County Family and Children First Council that seeks to prevent re-traumatization. It involves first-responders entering notifications for schools when they encounter a child in a traumatic situation, and also encourages positive encounters between schools and first-responders. First-responder departments that have been trained include Tiffin Police Department, Tiffin Fire Rescue Division, Fostoria Police Department, Fostoria Fire Division and Seneca County Sheriff's Office.

Family / Community Events
Math Night was held on Thursday, 3/9/23 from 6:00-7:30 pm for students and families in grades PK-5. Over 200 people were in attendance. Families enjoyed exploring new math games that students use in the classroom along with refreshments and math prizes. PTO and ABC sponsored the purchase of math games for our PK-5 classrooms.
Wax Museum: 3rd graders presented their findings on their research of a president during a wax museum on March 3rd at 8:30 am and 1:30 pm. The event was well attended by families and other staff and students.
Community Career Day: New Riegel’s second annual Community Career Day is March 20.
Student Activities
Jump Rope for Hearts: Ms. Clouse partnered with the American Heart Association to promote healthy hearts. Students collected donations and participated in a Jump Rope challenge.
End of QA Reward: On Thursday, March 16th, PK-5 students will experience an informational presentation about whales from PBS partnering with Bowling Green State University. A lifesize whale will be set up in the junior high gym for students to explore.
Junior students attended the Higher Education Day at Heidelberg University March 8.
The class trip is the week of March 13. Students will return on Saturday March 18.
The 3’d quarter ends March 16, and there is no school for students on March 17.
Spring Break begins on April 6, and school resumes on April 11.
Assessments
Gifted Testing: 2nd and 5th grade students completed the online Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) during the mornings of February 22nd and 23rd. The CogAT measures reasoning abilities in the three areas most linked to academic success in school: verbal, quantitative and nonverbal. Families will receive narrative profiles of their child’s performance.
NWEA: Spring NWEA will be administered in the subjects of ELA and Math for all students in grades K-5. The testing window is from March 20th - April 5th for 3rd-5th grade and April 11th - April 28th for K-2.
